We begin our journey in ceramics this semester with the creation of “Name Stamps and Face Jugs”; both of these projects are considered “Hand Built”.
Chapter Three of our text will guide you future into the process of “Hand Building”. You will learn more about using the pinch, coil, slab and hand building techniques.
You will be asked to discuss the aesthetic qualities of English and Japanese tea bowls/ sets, understand how to choose the best mold for a particular purpose, and create an imaginative sculpture that may be used for storage (ceramic box).
Please read this chapter carefully so that you may answer the following review questions on our discussion page.
Review Questions: Answers (1, 2, 3) will be due (on discussion page) April 8, 2011
1- What are three types of molds used with soft clay slabs?
2- Study the pinch pots made by artist in this chapter. Describe their sensory qualities. What clues tell you that they were made by pinching?
3- In this chapter, find examples of ceramic pieces that can be used for storage. What are the requirements for a good storage container? Which forms seem better suited for this function? Why?
4- Finally, create a design for a storage container. Think of something special (tangible or intangible), that this container would hold. Think of using elements that symbolize the contents of the container. Design a sculpture that incorporates the box form or experiment with angular shapes and textural finishes. You may also use an alteration of shape, repetition of texture and relief to enhance expressive qualities of your design. Bring this design to class, if time is available , construction may begin.
Your design will be due on Friday April 8, 2011.
